It was developed by \u003cbr\u003e\r\nTsNIITochMash, Central Institute for Precision Machine Building,\u003cbr\u003e\r\nin the early 1990s. It is based on the AS Val silenced assault rifle \u003cbr\u003e\r\nbut lacks an integral suppressor and has a newly-designed \u003cbr\u003e\r\nfolding stock and cocking handle for ease of concealed carry. \u003cbr\u003e\r\nAfter the adoption of SR-3, the FSB established new operational \u003cbr\u003e\r\nrequirements with a goal to combine the qualities of the SR-3,\u003cbr\u003e\r\nAS Val and VSS Vintorez, resulting in a new variant designated \u003cbr\u003e\r\nSR-3M (СР-3М). It features a quick detachable suppressor and a \u003cbr\u003e\r\nredesigned handguard with a collapsible foregrip. The iron sights \u003cbr\u003e\r\nhave also been relocated to the upper front handguard as \u003cbr\u003e\r\nopposed to being located on the suppressor, apparently for when \u003cbr\u003e\r\nthe gun is used without the suppressor attached.
